Book Review: Ashes on the Moor by Sarah Eden
Book Thoughts by Rachelle:
I am a huge fan of Sarah Eden‘s books! She has dozens of bestselling and award-winning titles and I’ve almost read all of them. This new book is another addition to the Proper Romance line and I couldn’t wait to read it! The cover is absolutely stunning and Eden’s words pulled me completely into northern England and the city of Yorkshire. This book quickly became a favorite because I was reminded of my own visit to northern England and the incredible town of Yorkshire twenty years ago. Isn’t it wonderful that we can take a visit through the pages of a book?
Ashes on the Moor is set in Victorian England when factories were starting to change the landscape and socioeconomic paths of the English. The character of Evangeline is stoic, maddeningly ladylike, courageous, and romantic. I loved seeing the change that took place in Evangeline when she was forced to live on her own and do things she’d never attempted before–like cooking!
The romance that developed between Evangeline and Dermot was layered beautifully and grew slowly, yet at a satisfying pace. If you enjoy great writing, historical romance, clean romance, then you should definitely consider adding this book to your To-Read list!
Here’s more about the book:
The life of an impoverished schoolteacher is not one Evangeline Blake would have chosen for herself. Torn from her home and her beloved sister and sent to work in the gritty factory town of Smeatley, Evangeline must prove herself to her grandfather, a man who values self-reliance above all else, before he will grant her access to her inheritance. Raised to be a lady of refinement, she hasn’t any of the skills necessary to manage on her own nor does she have the first idea how to be a teacher. But failure means never being with her sister again.
Alone and overwhelmed, she turns to the one person in town who seems to know how she feels—Dermot McCormick, an Irish brick mason who is as far from home and as out of place as she is. Despite the difference in their classes and backgrounds, Evangeline and Dermot’s tentative friendship deepens and grows. Her determination and compassion slowly earn her the faith and confidence of the skeptical residents of Smeatley, who become like the family she has lost.
But when a secret from her past comes to light, Evangeline faces an impossible choice: seize the opportunity to reclaim her former life and rejoin her sister or fight for the new life she has struggled to build for herself—a life that includes Dermot.
Ashes on the Moor is the inspiring love story of one Victorian woman’s courage to fight against all odds, and the man whose quiet strength gives her the confidence to keep trying.

Book Review: Words of the Savior
Book Thoughts by Rachelle
Words of the Savior is a beautiful gift book perfect for this Easter time of year, or any time of the year. I’m happy I got the chance to review this book. I love these simple books that remind you of Jesus Christ. He is my Savior and I’m grateful for His words. This book focuses on Jesus’s words from the Bible–so many poignant passages coupled with beautiful photos.
I love gift books like these. The kind that you can pick up and flip through at any time for a sweet feeling of the Spirit. The beautiful photo illustrations beg contemplation as you read the words of the Savior from the Bible. This book is perfect for any age, young to old. I saw several members of my young family flipping through the book. I shared the book with my little boys who can’t read yet, just showing a few pages and explaining what the pictures were about.
Anything that helps us think more of our Savior, Jesus Christ is a welcome addition in my home.
Here’s more about the book:
Jesus Christ is the Master Teacher. What better way to learn eternal truths than by studying His words? This beautiful book pairs the timeless and poignant teachings and parables of the Lord Jesus Christ with stunning images that bring the Savior’s words to life.
Distilled from the writing of the New Testament, Words of the Savior highlights selections from the Messiah’s mortal ministry as He walked, taught, and healed among the people.
Some of His teachings were delivered as softly spoken invitations to “arise, and be not afraid” (Matthew 17:7), while others were presented in parables and discourses to devoted disciples and travel-weary followers as they walked the roads of Jerusalem and Galilee. Through seemingly simple appeals, thoughtful parables, and words of warning, the Savior taught essential lessons that are as applicable in our lives today s they were in the meridian of time. Each
page of this inspirational book presents an opportunity for pondering and reflection on how better to pattern our lives after the words of the Savior.
With full-color, artfully-designed pages, this exquisite, inspirational book is the perfect gift for every occasion and makes an excellent addition to every gospel library.

Book Review: The Match Maker (The Husband Maker Book 2) by Karey White
Book Thoughts by Rachelle
I’m a big fan of Karey White’s contemporary romances. I’ve read all of her books and enjoyed them quite a bit. Today I’m sharing my review of book #2 in her new series, The Match Maker. I was so eager to read this book because I really wanted to find out what happened to Charlotte and her chances at love after reading The Husband Maker (The Husband Maker, Book 1)
I liked The Match Maker and its idyllic setting in Scotland as well as San Francisco. The storyline pulls at your heartstrings while still engaging Charlotte in character growth and development that makes this story more and kept me turning the pages faster.
This is definitely part of a series and I was sad to have the book end. Very sad because things weren’t turning out how I’d hoped but at the same time it has me itching to get my hands on book #3! I’m intrigued by this story and how White has drawn out the complexities of the typical romance plot to a deeper level in this series. I highly recommend this clean contemporary romance for anyone who loves a good read.
Here’s more about the book:
(Summary contains spoilers if you have not yet read book #1 The Husband Maker)
It’s been six months since Charlotte and Kyle broke up, and the Husband Maker strikes again. Kyle is officially engaged, while Charlotte is still nursing a broken heart.
In an effort to get Charlotte out of her rut, she and her best friend decide it’s time for some good old-fashioned matchmaking. While Aleena arranges for Charlotte to meet up with a handsome Scottish tourist, Charlotte gets her two best friends together. But when sparks start to fly between Aleena and Angus, Charlotte is left feeling more alone that ever–at least until the charming Scotsman becomes more than just a safe, rebound guy and teaches her that maybe, just maybe, she can dare to open her heart again.

Book Review: Silence by Deborah Lytton
Book Thoughts by Rachelle:
Silence is a young adult contemporary novel with a story about life, learning, tragedy, romance, and rediscovering yourself. I highly recommend this book as a clean teen read.
I loved this book. I wasn’t sure how I would feel about it at first–it is written in first person, present tense, which is tricky to do and keep everything straight. Lytton did a great job with the voice and point of view as well as the present tense. Silence struck a chord with me because I love music and enjoy singing, so I kept imagining myself in Stella’s place and how I would handle things. Envisioning her struggle through a teen’s eyes, she handled things extremely well. It was neat to read about all the possibilities there are for hearing loss and also be reminded of just how difficult it is to live without sound or impaired hearing.
I enjoyed experiencing the push and pull of Stella’s relationship with Hayden as they both rediscover themselves and found a way to heal.
Lytton’s writing is lyrical, full of music itself and the story carries itself forward in a realistic way that makes you feel as if you really know Stella and Hayden and their families.
I have an almost twelve-year-old who gets excited about reading romance but there’s not much that is safe for her young age. I’m very pleased that I can pass this book on to her next, knowing that she will not only love the story but learn something from it too. Thank you to Deborah Lytton for crafting a tale that can be enjoyed in the wide age-range of teen readers (and their moms too!)
Here’s more about the book:
Stella was born to sing. Someday Broadway. Even though she is only a sophomore at a new high school, her voice has given her the status as a cool kid. But then a tragic accident renders her deaf. She cannot hear herself sing not to mention speak. She cannot hear anything. Silence. What happens when everything you have dreamed of and hoped for is shattered in a single moment?
Enter Hayden, the boy with blonde curls who stutters. He is treated like an outcast because he is not normal. And, yet, Stella feels an attraction to him that she cannot explain. As Hayden reaches out to help Stella discover a world without sound his own tragic past warns him to keep a distance. But their connection is undeniable. Can the boy who stutters and the girl whose deaf find a happily-ever-after?
SILENCE is a story of friendship and hope with a lesson that sometimes it takes a tragedy to help us find beauty and love in unexpected places.

Book Review: The Husband Maker (The Husband Maker Book 1) by Karey White
Book Thoughts by Rachelle

Here’s more about the book:

She may not love being called Charles or Chuck, but the hardest nickname to take is the one she was given in college, the one that’s followed her now for too many years. They call her “the husband maker” and sadly, it fits. Every guy she’s dated since high school has become his next girlfriend’s husband. Not hers. Not three girlfriends down the road. The next.
Is she doing something wrong or is she just cursed?
When Kyle Aldsworth enters the picture and sweeps her off her feet, Charlotte begins to hope that maybe she’s not destined to be single forever. A senator’s son with political aspirations of his own, Kyle’s wealthy, handsome, and in need of a wife. Will Charlotte be disappointed yet again, or will she finally be able to make a husband for herself?
