Book Review: The Golden Plates Comic Book

I have a pretty cool book to share with you today–a comic book. This comic book is based on scripture from The Book of Mormon. I study and love this scripture as part of my religion as a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints. The Book of Mormon has changed my life, so I want my children to learn it also. Sometimes it’s tough for kids to understand scriptural language so I love it when there is a companion that can help them understand the gospel stories. The Golden Plates #1 comic book is a perfect companion to teach the scriptures that I know and love to my children. My young boys were especially excited about reading this because they enjoy graphic novels. The illustrations are excellent. The word boxes are clear and easy to read for upper beginning readers. For kids that aren’t comfortable reading at chapter book level yet, they might find it difficult to read the word boxes because that print is much smaller than beginning readers. I’d recommend reading along with them. This first book in the series covers the events of the escape from Jerusalem. I like how the illustrations show facial expressions that help my kids understand on a deeper level what is happening in the story. My family is looking forward to reading more of The Golden Plates comic books. These are available in paperback and also as ebook!

Book Review: Kiss of the Spindle by Nancy Allen

Fans of steampunk will love this great twist on the Sleeping Beauty tale. Not a fan of steampunk, or don’t even know what it is? You’ll still love it! At least I think you will because when I read Nancy Campbell Allen’s book, Beauty and the Clockwork Beast, I had no idea what steampunk was. Basically it’s a story where a classic setting is integrated into a society that utilizes steam-powered or gear-powered technology. If you love a good romance, I think you should read this book.

Doctor Isla Cooper is incredibly resourceful, smart, and beautiful. Oh, and she’s cursed, so she bullies her way onto Daniel Pickett’s private airship to try to find a cure. The crew and passengers aboard are delightful, curious, scary, and clever. I enjoyed the many different forms of tension in the book, from romantic to mystery to paranormal. Shape-shifters, criminals, detectives, and captains all play a big role in this story. Allen did an awesome job of weaving in intricate details from the classic Sleeping Beauty fairy tale. You’ll want to be on the lookout for them throughout the story. I think you’ll smile and even hold your breath a time or two. There’s definitely some swoony kisses in this book and I loved it because it is a clean romance–the best kind! I look forward to reading more books by Nancy Campbell Allen.

Book Review: Loving Lieutenant Lancaster by Sarah Eden

Summertime has been absolutely nuts around here so I’m very happy to review Loving Lieutenant Lancaster by Sarah Eden. Reading this book was a delightful visit back into the world of the Loving Lieutenant Lancaster by [Eden, Sarah M.]Lancasters and colliding with the Jonquil family that Sarah Eden has created. There is a lot going on in this book with mentions of nearly every Lancaster and Jonquil character, so you’ll have a lot of fun recognizing old friends from other books that Eden has written. If you haven’t read any of Eden’s books featuring these families, I imagine that there will be a bit of lost connection but not so great that you won’t still enjoy and appreciate the story. I would definitely recommend reading Seeking Persephone first so that you can have a proper introduction to the Duke of Kielder.

In this novel, we meet Arabella Hampton and discover how she is introduced to the handsome and curious Lieutenant Lancaster. As I mentioned, there is lots of interaction with other characters, their secret confidences, and events that make this novel fun to read. Most of the novel takes place during a house party and Eden definitely knows how to put on a party. Several of the guests had a hand in the attempted matchmaking of Lieutenant Lancaster, but Mater Jonquil has wisdom that many miss. Arabella’s aunt and uncle are wonderfully despicable and easy to dislike, while other characters who tried to influence her were not so easy to dislike. This is a character-driven novel that sits well with the collection Eden has created. I love happy endings and this one does not disappoint.

Book Review: Perfect Set by Melanie Jacobson

Perfect Set by [Jacobson, Melanie]

This story is a perfect light summer romance! I adore Melanie Jacobson‘s writing style and Perfect Set is another excellent addition. This story is about a sports news reporter who has to interview a pro beach volleyball athlete…and she falls hard in the process. I think the thing I loved most about this book was the character of Bree. She’s the main character and is sharp, witty, and hyper-aware of the subtle nuances that most of us miss in conversation. I kept reading how she would interact with people and the things she would notice and I wondered how many people are like Bree–tons going on behind a pretty innocent face that you’d never guess. I like how Jacobson busted some great perceptions about women in journalism, especially sports journalism. I also liked how the cool and confident Bree had the focus turned back on herself. She had to do some pretty tough self-examination and she couldn’t escape it with quick-thinking wit.

This is the type of romance that I enjoy reading–one that’s clean, upbeat, and makes you think at the same time. I’d love to meet the characters of Bree and Kade in real life!
